Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración
INFORMACIÓN
The Monument of the Heroes of the Restoration, better known as the "Monument of Santiago," was inaugurated on September 30, 1953, and was originally named "Trujillo's Monument to Peace." However, shortly after the tyrannicide, on December 29, 1961, its name was changed to commemorate the heroes of the Restoration War (Law No. 5724).
It is partially covered with marble from Samaná. Inside, it features murals by Spanish painter Vela Zanetti, which are said to be the reason why the dictator did not visit the work on the day of its inauguration. Since its restoration in 2012, it has functioned as a museum.
The impressive neoclassical monument is located on Cerro del Castillo (175 meters above sea level), which, in addition to its 70 meters of constructed height, gives it a natural hierarchy that makes it an urban landmark of Santiago and a cultural icon for the entire country.
