  • INFORMATION

Merengue, a contagious and joyful rhythm, is considered the national dance and music of the Dominican Republic. Its origin dates back to the late 18th century, with a blend of African and European influences that turned it into one of the most prominent symbols of Dominican identity.

The characteristics of its rhythm are:

    • Binary: Strong emphasis on the first beat of each measure.
    • Instruments: Accordion, güira, tambora, and other percussion instruments.
    • Dance: Couples spinning in close circles, with quick and synchronized steps.

Merengue has evolved over time, from its beginnings in rural areas to its presence on international stages. Figures like Juan Luis Guerra, Johnny Ventura, and Wilfrido Vargas have popularized merengue worldwide.

It represents the joy, sensuality, and vitality of the Dominican people. It is a fundamental element of their culture and traditions, present in parties, celebrations, and social gatherings. It was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005, a recognition of its cultural and social value as a symbol of Dominican identity.
