Basílica Catedral Nuestra Sra. de la Altagracia

  • INFORMATION

The Basilica was built to replace the old Sanctuary where the painting of the Virgin had been since 1572. It has a Latin cross floor plan, and its main arch rises about 80 meters, while its main nave is covered by a set of stepped vaults. The first stone of the Cathedral was blessed by Archbishop Monsignor Octavio A. Beras on January 21, 1952, and it took 19 years to complete.

Shortly after its inauguration, on October 12, 1971, it was declared a "National Monument" (Law No. 32), and on October 17 it was declared a "Minor Basilica" by Pope Paul VI. On August 15, 1973, it became the "Cathedral" of the diocese of Higüey. On October 12, 1992, the Cathedral was personally blessed by Pope John Paul II.
